Celebrating Maureen Thornett: A Trailblazer in Balmain’s Hospitality Scene
- July 25, 2024
Maureen Thornett has been the proud owner of The Royal Oak Hotel in Balmain for over 35 years, but her journey in the hospitality industry began much earlier. Back in the 60s, a time when smoking on planes was allowed and all-female flight crews (except the pilots) were chosen for their looks and single status, Maureen worked as a flight attendant.
In 1965, after getting married, Maureen traded the skies for the pubs. This transition was no small feat, as women in those days weren’t even allowed to drink in pubs, let alone manage them! Alongside her husband, Maureen successfully ran several pubs, including The Dolphin in Surry Hills for almost a decade.
Following the end of her marriage, Maureen vowed never to step foot in a pub again. However, her passion for the industry was undeniable, and in 1987, she purchased the 144-year-old Royal Oak Hotel. Since then, Maureen has been a cornerstone of the Balmain community.
When Maureen first took over the Royal Oak, the pub and the surrounding Balmain area were predominantly working-class and male-dominated. During her first week, she didn’t see a single woman in the pub. Unfazed, Maureen began to introduce her touch to the establishment. She improved the food, welcomed everyone with her infectious smile, and ensured the bar maintained a respectful atmosphere.
Maureen proved her worth in a male-dominated world by working tirelessly and excelling beyond expectations. It didn’t take long for her to earn the respect of the community. Over the years, The Royal Oak Balmain has flourished into a thriving business. In a competitive market, Maureen has created something all great pubs aspire to be—a home away from home.
Despite having the option to retire long ago, Maureen continues to serve meals and work the bar, showing no signs of slowing down. Her dedication and love for her community and business have now been officially recognised by the Australian Hotels Association (AHA). Last month, surrounded by her three daughters, Maureen was inducted into the AHA NSW Hall of Fame and awarded the Cyril Maloney Medal.
To honour Maureen’s achievements, a civic reception will be held this Saturday, 27th July, at 2 pm at The Royal Oak Hotel. This beloved pub, a warm and welcoming haven for many locals, will be the perfect venue to celebrate Maureen’s vibrant and colourful contributions.
CobdenHayson is thrilled for Maureen, who has been a steadfast supporter of our company since our opening party at the Royal Oak in 2005. Every community needs a Maureen, and celebrating her contributions to Balmain’s fabric is well deserved.
We love you, Maureen, and extend our heartfelt congratulations and gratitude for everything you’ve done to make Balmain a better place.
